A smooth compactification of strata of abelian differentials..

The moduli space of flat surfaces is stratified according to the number and multiplicities of zeros. The goal of the talk is to construct a compactification of those strata that is as nice as Deligne-Mumford's compactification of the moduli space of curves. Applications include computation of characteristic quantities of flat surfaces.
